Cobus has many years of experience in the African mining sector. He qualified as a chartered accountant with Deloitte & Touche in South Africa. He has been a director of Pan African since 2009, serving as financial director from 2013 until his appointment as chief executive officer on 1 March 2015.
Cobus’s tenure as CEO has overseen the company develop a track record of successful tailings retreatment projects (including in Barberton and Elikhulu in Evander) and will now further expand its tailings operations by constructing the Mogale Tailings Retreatment project, which will add some 50,000oz/yr of low cost, high-margin tailings to the company’s production profile in 2025.
He has also initiated Pan African’s expansion outside South Africa, diversifying its activities to the Northern Territory in Australia, in the country’s highest-grade gold province, and achieved its first gold pour in May 2025. The operations currently have an 8 year life of mine, with a dominant exploration land position for further upside potential in this Tier 1 mining jurisdiction.
